24 Jan Forgetting Words in a Foreign Language?
We’ve all been there: you’re mid-sentence in a foreign language, and suddenly, the word you desperately need vanishes from your mind. Frustrating, right? This could happen during Italian online lesson or a conversation with a friend.
In my recent deep dive into learning (courses, podcasts, books galore!), one technique consistently shines: spaced repetition. This powerful method, proven to solidify information in your memory, is applicable to any subject, but we’ll concentrate on language learning here.
Spaced repetition involves actively recalling words or phrases at increasing intervals. Don’t expect mastery on the first encounter. Research suggests you might need up to 18 exposures to truly internalize a word (check out this book). This has been consistently supported by newer research (see for yourself here).
The good news is that many language learning apps, such as Anki, Quizlet, Babbel, and Mondly, are built on spaced repetition algorithms. These apps present words at increasing intervals, aiming to review them just before you’re about to forget. This is a highly effective way to boost long-term retention.
For vocabulary learning, dedicated apps are a fantastic resource. At our school, AL DENTE. Scuola d’italiano, we create Quizlet sets for all our coursebooks, making vocabulary learning more engaging and effective for our students.
You can also create your own flashcards using Quizlet or Anki (both free). Or, if you’re feeling ambitious, you can even design your own spaced repetition system with paper flashcards.
If you try spaced repetition, you will never look back. You’ll see that there are words that will stick with you immediately and others more difficult to remember. The algorithm will help you remember all of them!
